All mechanisms when they start are meant to work as long as they are maintained or fed. If a mechanism is computerized or humanized it may have the ability to learn and grow. Imagine being able to learn from our own mistakes or the mistakes of others. This is where mechanisms become organisms and this is where organizationally we need to be heading.
I see a lot of businesses in crisis and we sometimes forget that a business is made up of many many lives that are meant to sustain the business. But the business has an obligation to sustain the employees as well.
Too many people are working in environments and for companies they don't like. They need a job so people go from job to job or paycheck to paycheck because they need to live and making money is a part of living that most people require.
What if you woke up tomorrow morning and there was $10 million in your bank account? You won the lottery or someone died and left you the money. Bottom-line its your money todo whatever you want with. What would you do? Would you stay at work? Would you live in the same place, have then same friends, same relationships?
Most people would change everything or at least they think they would.
Now imagine, whatever money you have today is all you have. You wake up tomorrow morning and you aren't feeling well and you go see the doctor. Within a few hours you find out you have only 6 months to live. Now, what would you do? Would you stay at your job, stay in the same relationships, what would you do?
Psychologists will share, your answer in both situations should be the same. These questions are the only two answers I ask CEO candidates for any company I have an equity stake in. It shows balance and where priorities really are.
Needs are finite and wants are infinite, Time is finite and money although finite in our world, is infinite. Time is money and money can buy short term happiness. Everyone who has ever accomplished a life goal has reached what many call the glass ceiling. You got to the ceiling but you know and can see there is more to life. Now what?
As we grow older we stop thinking that about years and begin thinking about months, days and moments. The little things become more significant. You do a lot of reflection.
Time is finite. What are you going todo today or in this moment? Is it for you or for someone you love? Will it make a difference, will it be remembered and by whom?
We have an obligation to do things that better the lives of the people we care about and love. We are responsible to our families, to our businesses and to our communities. Many of us also believe we are responsible to God. Yes , we are responsible to a higher power. I used to think we are responsible only to ourselves. What a shallow sick place to be. It's all about us. Really?
Responsibility comes from knowing and realizing we are not alone. Our actions impact other people. When people are in need and you see it, you are supposed to help. When we help someone they should reciprocate by saying thank you and maybe helping us or passing it on to others someday. This isn't an altruistic view, its who we were created to be and its our obligation!
